Chapter 37 (Ending 2): For God’s sake

Present day

“Well then if you’re sure, know that I’m here for you.” Said Logan.

“Thank you.” Khushi replied and hugged him.

Just then the door burst open and Amba came rushing in. When she saw Logan and Khushi hugging, she put her hands on her hips. “Oh so that’s why you’re taking so long, you’re planning to elope with Logan.”

Logan laughed. “I wish. No, your mother just needed a friend right now and I was the only one available.”

“And Amba you know you shouldn’t be running around.” Chastised Khushi.

“I wouldn’t have to if you just kept to the schedule. The pandit keeps saying how the auspicious time is going and if you plan to get married, you need to do it now otherwise you can’t do it today and you’ll have you wait another 5 months.”

“5 months isn’t so bad-” Khushi reasoned.

“Khushi you just said you were fine.” Sighed Logan.

“Sorry, I guess I’m still nervous. My first wedding was a disaster you know.” She said defensively.

“Yes we all know mum, yet you still agreed to marry the same man again.” Amba said in frustration.

“Why are you being like this?” pouted Khushi.

“Because you’ve been changing your mind for over 8 months now and we’re all sick and tired of it. Either get married or live in sin, I honestly don’t care as long as you’re happy.”

“I’ve only been like this because of you-”

“No no no, don’t put this on me. I’m fine.”

“No you’re not! You were shot!” yelled Khushi.

1 year, 6 months and 3 days ago

Amba was still in the operation theatre and Karan, Khushi and Logan were still waiting wearily for any news.

“Karan?” Khushi started.

“Yeah?”

“We all need therapy.” She stated.

He looked at her for a second before responding. “Yes but I think you need sleep more.”

“No I’m serious. The Raizadas’ and the Guptas’ have too much bad blood between them. It goes way back; my mother was the cause of Arnav’s parents’ marriage falling apart which led to both his parents committing suicide, which lead to him hating everything-”

“Khushi get to the point.”

Khushi gave him a dirty look but got to the point. “The point is I think we all need to go to therapy and talk things out so we have no more misunderstandings and we can all begin to heal.”

“You want to heal things with them even after all they’ve done.” Karan asked incredulously.

Khushi sighed. “Yes, I think it’ll be best if we put everything behind us and resolve our issues. It’ll be better for my sister’s marriage and our lives too. It’ll feel like a load off our souls, trust me.”

Karan stared at her but it looked like she wasn’t going to budge on this topic. He could see it in her eyes. He sighed. “Ok, if that’s what you want.”

“It is.” She said determinedly.

A few hours passed when finally a doctor appeared in front of them. All 3 of them stood up.

“Mr Karan Malik, Ms Khushi Gupta?” she asked.

“Yes.” They replied.

“Your daughter is going to be fine.” She said with a smile. All 3 of them let out a sigh of relief. “She’s a bit weak at the moment but with the correct amount of physiotherapy, she’ll be as good as new in no time.”

They all thanked the doctor and Khushi asked, “Can we see her?”

“Yes but only for a while, she’s still unconscious and she needs all the rest she can get.”

The doctor led them to the room that Amba was staying in. They walked in to find Amba wired to a lot of machinery but the most important machinery was the ECG which told them that Amba was indeed still alive. Fresh tears ran down Khushi’s face but this time from happiness.

Later that day more good news came. Matt had called Karan to inform him that Shyam was dead. When he had shot Amba, the police had opened fire on him to stop him from shooting anyone else. Even though they didn’t shoot to kill he later died from blood loss. They were relieved that the plague upon both their families were gone and now he couldn’t do any more damage towards them.

Present day

“Yes I was.” Amba said softly as she held her mother’s hands. “However, I’m fine now, I promise. Now let’s get you married ok? Besides, the Raizada’s flew all this way for your wedding so you can’t cancel it. It might set us back on all the progress we made through therapy.”

Khushi gasped. “You’re right, I don’t want that to happen.”

“Good. Logan go and wait downstairs with all the guests and make sure no one does anything stupid. I’ll bring her down in a while.”

“Yes ma’am.” He said and with a mock salute to Amba, he was gone.

Once Logan was gone, Amba turned to her mother. “Mum are you only postponing the wedding because you’re worried that the past will repeat itself?”

Khushi chewed her lips. “Nooooo.”

Amba gave her mum a look. “Mum.”

“Ok, I’m a little worried.” She confessed.

“Mum, if that ever happens, Logan, dad and I will come over and destroy Arnav Singh Raizada and the Raizada family. Do you know how much interrogation the Riazadas’ underwent when you said yes to Arnav? We made sure that it won’t be like last time.” Amba said seriously.

“I can’t believe you did that.” Khushi confessed.

“Of course we did. These people ruined your life-”

“Amba!”

“Mum, we can’t be too careful. You mean too much to us.” Amba said sincerely.

“Thank you.” Khushi smiled.

“I still can’t believe you chose Arnav over Logan.” Amba wrinkled her nose.

Before Khushi could defend herself, Payal came in to the room. “Khushi I couldn’t find Karan bhai so you’re going to have to wait and speak to him afterwards because you need to go down now.”

“Jiji, were you looking for Karan all this time?” Khushi asked.

“Of course. Amba help me arrange your mother.” Amba came over and helped her aunt.

“Jiji, I already talked to him, so it’s ok.”

“That’s good. Are you ready?”

Khushi smiled. “Yes.”

They got Khushi safely downstairs despite her big dress and clumsiness. The wedding went off without a hitch and everyone went off to the reception.

During the reception, Arnav approached Amba. “Amba?” he said.

“Mr Raizada.” She extended her hand, “Congratulations.”

During the many months of therapy, Amba found out that Arnav was actually her father. However, she stubbornly refused to accept him as such.

“I’m sorry.” She had said. “But to me, my dad will always be Karan.”

“I’m not trying to replace your father Amba.” Arnav had reasoned. “I just want to know you better. You know, just spend some time with you so I can try and make up for all the lost years.”

Amba had looked at him sceptically but finally agreed.

“How have you been?” asked Arnav pulling Amba out of her thoughts.

“I’ve been fine. And you?” she replied politely.

“I’ve been doing ok.”

There was an awkward pause. Both of them were still trying to get used to the fact that they were father and daughter.

Amba decided to break the silence. “I don’t think I need to give you any more warning about treating my mum right or not to repeat what you did last time.”

Arnav looked appalled before he schooled his features. “I wouldn’t do that to Khushi, not again. I love her and I want her to be happy. I’ll spend a life time righting the wrongs I did to her and thankfully she allowed me to spend that life time with her.”

“Yes well, just don’t mess up your second chance.”

“I promise not to.”

They both shared another awkward silence.

“Well I’m going to go and talk to the other guests.” Amba said hurriedly.

“Yeah me too.”

And they both ran off in different directions and nearly bumped into Nandini and Krishna who were playing with a couple of other children. Their relationship wasn’t perfect but they were at least trying, even if the progress was slow and awkward. A few feet away, Anjili chuckled at the spectacle in front of her.

Khushi walks towards Anjili. “They’re hopeless, aren’t they?” Khushi says with a smile.

Anjili smiles back. Anjili was thankful that during their therapy sessions, she had managed to see the truth and forgive Khushi and in turn Khushi had forgiven her for the part she had played in her leaving the Raizada house. Anjili was the first person to welcome Khushi back into their family when Arnav and her announced their engagement. She definitely didn’t want to stand in their way this time.

“They’re trying so they’ll be fine.” She turns her gaze towards her eldest daughter. “Which is more than I can say for Neha.”

Poor Neha had tried her hardest to make her marriage work but she could see just how miserable her husband was. He didn’t love her, she knew that but she thought he would in time. It’s been nearly 2 years since they got married and she could see that she was the cause of her husband’s depression. She talked to her mother about this issue and Anjili told her the story about her own loveless marriage and finally Neha saw sense. So she chose to let him go. She filed for a divorce and moved back in with her parents. Since then she’s been an emotional wreck but she did find some solace in the fact that her husband was happier. Anjili had dragged Neha to the wedding hoping that it would take her mind off the divorce; she could see that it was working to some extent.

“She’ll be fine in time. How are Priti and Neha getting along now?” Khushi asked.

They recently found out that what they had thought of as a simple teenage rebellion was actually something a lot bigger. It turned out that Priti was jealous of Neha so she was acting out for attention. Neha was always treated with better care than Priti and she hated it. When Anjili, Viren and Neha had heard all of this they decided to change their ways.

“Well, they aren’t trying to kill each other any more so that’s nice. We’re trying to treat them both equally and not favour one over the other. To be honest, we didn’t even notice that we were treating them differently, if Priti hadn’t said anything, this would’ve continued.”

“It’s good to talk things out.”

“That’s true Khushiji.”

“I’m going to mingle some more. I’ll see you later Anjiliji.”

Khushi walked away and Priti came and grabbed Anjili and dragged her to where her family had gathered.

“Mum, Aarav bhai has a boyfriend.” Priti says excitedly.

Anjili smiles. “Is that so?”

“That’s not all,” Payal says. “He’s been going out with him for 2 years now.”

“What?! And we haven’t met him yet? What is this Aarav?” Anjili demands.

Aarav looked flustered. “Well umm I was umm er um-”

“Has your dad met him?”

“No he hasn’t, no one has. No one would’ve know about him at all if it wasn’t for stupid Sachin and Sanjay.” He glowers at Sachin and Sanjay’s direction.

But all Sachin and Sanjay do is grin back and high-five each other. “He’s just ashamed that he bottoms so he doesn’t want us meeting his boyfriend.” Sanjay says cheekily.

Payal smacks his head. “How dare you talk to your older brother with such cheek?”

“Sorry, not sorry.” Sanjay says before running away as fast as he can.

Payal just shakes her head at her son.

“But seriously, who tops?” Sachin asks. One look from his mother, sends him running too.

“Bhai, I’ll make sure Sachin and Sanjay aren’t home when you bring him around.” Tara says.

“I’d appreciate that.” Aarav says with a smile.

“So bring him around soon.” Anjili insists. She then turns to NK. “Where’s Diane and the kids.”

“She couldn’t get off work and the kids have school, unfortunately.” He replied.

“That’s a shame but at least you’re here.”

“I’ll always be here for Khushiji.”

“I’m really glad you were all these years NK.” Anjili said honestly.

“Me too.” He said with a smile, and then he spotted someone in the distance. “Babuji!”

He hurried off to where Khushi’s mother, father and bua were talking to Nik and Natalie and Payal and Akash followed him.

Meanwhile, Amba and Logan jr were having a serious/not so serious conversation.

“So this wedding means we can keep doing our little arrangement.” Logan joked with a grin.

Amba laughed. “We already promised to stop.”

“Yeah but that was when your mum and my dad was getting married.”

She shoved at him. “For God’s sake, just get a girlfriend you dick!”

Logan sr watched this transaction and shook his head at them. Arnav walked towards Logan.

“Kids are just the craziest, aren’t they?” Logan said.

Arnav glanced at the direction of his own son and saw that he was still being interrogated about his boyfriend by his sister and her husband and wondered if he should go over their and save him. After thinking about for a second, he decides that Aarav can suffer for a while longer.

“They sure are.” He chuckled.

During the many months of healing, Logan saw that the love Khushi held for Arnav was still there. He could also see that Arnav loved her a lot and regretted everything he ever did to hurt her. And because he loved Khushi, he let her go. He cornered her and got a confession out of her about her love for Arnav. Once he had that he broke off their engagement and forced them to get engaged.

“I’m sure you’ve been threatened enough.”

Arnav nodded. “I have.”

“Just to make sure you get it, I’m going to threaten you again. Just because I gave up Khushi doesn’t mean I don’t love her, so if you hurt her, I will destroy you.”

Even though Logan said it in a calm and soft tone, Arnav gulped out of fear. “I understand.”

Logan gave him a dazzling smile. “I’m glad we understand each other.”

“Excuse me.” Arnav said as he moved to where Khushi was.

Khushi was talking to Matt. When Matt saw him a look of relief flooded his face. “Oh thank God, Arnav, tell your wife to stop thanking me.”

“Are you thanking him again?” Arnav asked Khushi. She nodded. “Good, let me join you. Thank you so much for helping save Amba.”

“Oh for God’s sake! You two are made for each other.” Matt said in frustration.

“Thank you.” They said in unison.

They continued thanking him for his assistance until Matt gave up and walked away. Arnav and Khushi laughed before sharing a chaste kiss.

“I love you.” Arnav said as he looked into her eyes.

“You better.” Khushi said in mock seriousness. “Otherwise a lot of people will hurt you.”

Arnav cringed. “Yes I know, I’ve been getting death threats all day.”

Khushi laughed and pulled him down for another kiss. They both sighed into the kiss, revelling in their happily ever after.

“For God’s sake we have children at this wedding!” Karan proclaimed causing the couple to break apart. “You’re scarring them.”

Khushi stuck her tongue out at him. “Shut up Karan, you’re just jealous.”

Karan rolled his eyes. “As if! Come on, we’re taking a family picture.”

He went ahead and Khushi extended her hand for Arnav to take. Arnav took her hand and they happily followed to where the picture would be taken. They stood in the centre as their family gathered around them. As the photographer set up the camera, they couldn’t help but think about how lucky they are to have found each other.

“I love you.” Arnav whispered to Khushi.

“I love you too.” She whispered back.

There was a clicking sound to seal the precious moment forever.

“We are but…look it’s complicated. Even though I don’t have any feelings for him, he says he still loves me. He said he won’t get in the way of my happiness and that he’ll stand back and let me get married to Logan because I love Logan but what if he does something.”

“He’s not going to.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I told security to keep an extra eye on him.”

Khushi laughed. “I can’t believe you did that.”

“It’s a precautionary measure, just in case he goes a bit mad. Now shall we go?”

Before she could answer, Payal came in to the room. “Khushi I couldn’t find Karan bhai so you’re going to have to wait and speak to him afterwards because you need to go down now.”

Arnav looked appalled before he schooled his features. “I wouldn’t do that to Khushi, not again. Besides, we’re just friends now and I want her to be happy and Logan makes her happy.”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean it to come out like that.” She looked at him apologetically.

“I know.”

Meanwhile, Amba and Logan jr were having a serious/not so serious conversation.

“So this wedding officially makes me your brother.” Logan said.

“Step brother.” Corrected Amba.

“Yeah but if we have sex, it’ll still be weird.” He joked with a grin.

Amba laughed. “We already promised to stop when we found out about the wedding.”

“Yeah but I’m going to miss it.” He said with mock sincerity.

She shoved at him. “Eww just get a girlfriend you dick!”

“They sure are.” He chuckled. There was a pause as Arnav gathered his words. “I know all’s fair in love and war, and I also know that you’ll take good care of Khushi. Please cherish her like I never could and never treat her how I did.”

Logan stuck his hand out for Arnav to shake. “Thank you. I hope you find happiness too.”

Arnav looked towards where Khushi was laughing with her parents and bua.

“My happiness will always be with her and since her happiness is with you, I wish you happiness.”

Logan smiled. “I used to think that too when my wife died. But Khushi helped me find happiness again. And I know you’ll find yours again.”

Arnav smiled back. “I hope so.”

“Excuse me.” Logan said as he moved to where Khushi was.

“Our family is crazy.” Logan said as he observed the guests.

“Yes they are. Any regrets?” Khushi asked as he looked up at him.

He looked down and he saw the love in his eyes being reflected back into hers. “None what so ever.” He said as he bent down to kiss her again.

They both sigh into the kiss, revelling in their happily ever after.

“For God’s sake we have children at this wedding!” Karan proclaimed causing the couple to break apart. “You’re scarring them.”

Khushi stuck her tongue out at him. “Shut up Karan, you’re just jealous.”

They stood in the centre as their family gathered around them. As the photographer set up the camera, they couldn’t help but think about how lucky they are to have found each other.

“I love you.” Whispered Logan to Khushi.

“I love you too.” She whispered back.

There was a clicking sound to seal the precious moment forever.

HWGA Chapter 36: Spoke Volumes

Yes I know I'm late, I acknowledge that I am a terrible person. However, hopefully I will have the next chapter up soon. The reason it was taking so long is because I had the biggest writers' block after my exams that I was actually afraid that I forgot how to write. But seeing Zondra put up a chapter inspired me to write again. Also this is probably the second to last chapter. Thank you to everyone who commented and liked the last chapter. Enjoy :)

Chapter 36: Spoke Volumes

Present day

Karan flicked her forehead bringing Khushi back to the present. She gave him a disapproving look and he grinned back at her.

“You think too much.” He said with a smile.

She struck her tongue out at him. “And you don’t think enough and that’s why I need to do twice the thinking.”

“Very mature.”

Just then Logan snuck into the room and quietly closed the door behind him. He hadn’t noticed yet that Karan was also in the room. When he turned around, Karan looked at him with an eyebrow raised.

Logan why are you sneaking in here like a thief?” he asked.

“Oh Karan, I didn’t know you were going to be here.”

“Mmmhmm and what would you have done if you had known?” he asked sassily.

“Umm uh umm well-”

“You know you’re not supposed to be up here Logan.”

Khushi slapped Karan’s arm. “Karan, leave him alone. In fact, leave us alone.”

Karan raised his hands. “Fine. But no funny business you two.” He said in a mock serious tone whilst wiggling his eyebrows.

Khushi smiled and shook her head at Karan antics and then turned to look at Logan. “What did you want to talk about?”

“I wanted to talk about today.”

“Oh.” Khushi sobered. “What about today?”

“Are you sure about today? Because if you’re not-” He paused and sighed. “Are you happy Khushi?”

“Yes.” Replied Khushi honestly because she remembered what true unhappiness was and this wasn’t it.

1 year, 6 months and 4 days ago

Logan ripped Karan off Arnav. While Karan was struggling to get out of Logan’s hold, Arnav was standing there motionlessly.

“Karan, remember what I said about this being a hospital and the fact that they have the right to kick you out.” Logan said with gritted teeth as he tried his best to restrain his friend.

“I don’t want that motherfucker to be here! He has zero rights be here. All he does is make me angry, besides that he’s useless.” Karan spat out.

Khushi finally spoke up. “Karan that’s not fair, he does have a right.” She said softly. She walked towards Karan and cupped his face, gently rearing his head so he would have to look at her. When Karan finally looked into Khushi’s eyes, he calmed down almost immediately.

“It’s alright Khushi.” Said Arnav as he came out of his stupor. “I’ll leave but please keep me posted.”

He was about to leave when a doctor came rushing towards them. “Are you Ms Khushi Gupta and Mr Karan Malik?”

“Yes.” Both Khushi and Karan said simultaneously.

“I’ve been sent to inform you about your daughter’s condition. She’s lost a lot of blood and on top of that, the bullet is very close to a crucial point on her spine. The surgery needed to take out the bullet will be a very long and delicate procedure. We’re doing all we can.”

“Will she live?” Khushi asked.

“They’re doing their best to ensure that she does.”

But the look the doctor gave whist saying those words spoke volumes and finally Khushi broke down.

Yes another announcement. I'm planning two different endings for this story, mainly because I'm not satisfied with one or the other and unfortunately I can't combine them. Hopefully I'll have it up by the end of this week.

AAD Chapter 12: Knight in Shining Armour to the Rescue?

This chapter is brought to you by Zondra. Enjoy :)

CHAPTER 12 –Knight in shining armour to the rescue?
“You just get ready, Ms Gupta” Arnav replied to Khushi’s question with the smile of someone who could see all his plans falling into place, just as he had anticipated.
“Rea-ready?” Khushi stammered, her mind conjuring up images of her nightmares where she was running from Arnav, and he always caught her.
“Yes, Ms Gupta.  Get ready.  I will pick you up tomorrow morning.” Arnav replied with cool detachment in his voice, when mentally he was congratulating himself on his success at getting the girl.  His sense of achievement at her acquiescence surprised him, because he had had more beautiful, famous and experienced woman that this Khushi Kumari Gupta but he had never felt this level of satisfaction when they agreed to his demands, as he was feeling now.  Maybe it was because she had been resisting him.  Maybe it was because he had not had a challenge from a woman in a long time.  Maybe because no woman had said no to him in, well, forever.  He had enjoyed the chase.  And he knew he would enjoy devouring her too.
Upon hearing that he intended to pick her from her home, Khushi panicked and cried out: “No, please.  Do not come here.  I will come and meet you up. At any place you choose.”
Arnav knew why she was asking this and he agreed:
“Okay, then,” He started, “you can come meet me at the CafĂ© which is found on the main road just two streets away from your house.  Be there at nine tomorrow morning. Okay?” He asked, wanting to confirm that she would not get out of the deal.
Khushi answered in the affirmative.  With a terse reply:  “Good.  I’ll see you”, Arnav hung up, leaving Khushi staring unseeingly at the mobile in her hand.
She was in shock and she had not yet come to terms with what she had just agreed to.  Her mind was working overtime trying to imagine what will happen to her tomorrow morning.  Her heart was racing, and she was scared of what would happen.  She was so lost in her thoughts that in took her a few minutes to realise that her family were talking very loudly in the sitting room.
Khushi listened to the voices, and realised that her parents, Buaji and Payal were arguing about her.  The elders were talking of throwing her out, while Payal was trying to convince them not to.  She was threatening that she would leave with Khushi if they threw her out.
Suddenly Khushi’s bedroom door opened, swung back and crashed on the wall with the force that Buaji pushed it.  Khushi saw her aunt striding angrily towards her, so she got up from her seated position on the bed and began:
“Buaji, what..”
She was promptly interrupted by her aunt who pointed her finger at her and said:
“Do not dare offer a justification.  We do not want to hear anything.  We all saw the video of you coming out of that awful man’s room.  We have decided that before the world wakes up tomorrow and comes to question us, we want you out of here.  Right now!”
Khushi looked to her parents for support, but she saw written on their facial expressions that they would not help her.  She asked the three adults:
“Where will I go at this hour?” Khushi knew she had to leave the house to go with that Devil Raizada, but she was not ready.  She thought she had till the next day.  Having her family asking her to leave like this was like a resounding slap; it left her numb and trembling.  But the adults of her family were not movable on this point; they wanted her out of the house right away!
Payal came to Khushi, held Khushi’s cold hands in her own and said: “I will not let you leave, Khushi.”
“Shut up, Payaliya.  We have decided, and you can do nothing about it” Garima answered coldly.  “We are doing this for you, my dear.  She is already ruined.  No one will marry her.  And if she stays here, then no one will marry you either.  She is going now and you are under my oath not to oppose our decision.  If you insist on going with her, then know that you will see the dead face of your mother!” Garima was absolutely determined to get Khushi out of the house.
“Amma!!” Payal answered in shock.  She could not believe it.  She could not believe that her mother would put her under such an oath.  She was torn between loyalty to her sister and fear for her mother’s life.  She turned helpless eyes to Khushi’s face and there, in her sister’s teary eyes, Payal read understanding and acceptance.
“Okay, enough drama now.  Let’s get her to leave”  Buaji said as she held Khushi by the elbow and began pulling her towards the door.
Buaji marched Khushi till the front door, then pushed her out and closed the door in her face.  Khushi stood there in the dark on the doorstep of the place that she had called home for a few days only.  She kept staring at the door, numb, but with dry eyes.  She was still too much in shock to cry.  It seemed like she could not take all that had just happened to her.
She walked away from the doorstep, and stepped onto the road.  She walked aimlessly, and unaware.  She was just instinctively putting one foot in front of the other, not knowing and not caring where she was walking to.
She saw again and again the faces of her parents and Buaji; she heard their words again.  Her Amma and Buaji wanted her out of their lives.  Even her Babuji had just stood there, stony-faced as they had thrown her out.  He had looked so disappointed in her, and this hurt her more than her mother’s anger and her aunt’s hurtful words.
She was walking on the road, so lost in her thoughts that she did not realise a car had stopped right next to her.  She was brought back to her senses by someone holding her by her upper arms and shaking her lightly.  She was straight away brought out of her nightmare and looked up into deep brown eyes framed by long, black eyelashes.  The anger in Arnav’s eyes as he looked down at her brought her back to herself, and she crashed down to Earth as she finally grasped that her family had thrown her out.
“What the hell do you think you are doing?  Walking alone on the streets of Delhi at this hour? Have you gone completely mad?” Arnav asked her coldly, anger dripping from every word, his eyes burning her with their intensity.  His fingers gripped her arms as he shook her, trying to get a reaction from her.  The way her hazel eyes glanced up at him with vulnerability and fragility overflowing from them gave him the sudden urge to gather her in his arms and kiss it all away from her eyes.
This thought shocked Arnav, and he suddenly let go of her.  With the sudden lack of his support, Khushi swayed on her feet, making Arnav swear and put his arm around her for support.  This sudden and unexpected show of concern surprised Khushi and she looked at him in gratitude, the dazed look still on her face.
The she remembered that he had asked her something, so she attempted to explain:
“My parents.. They.. They threw me out of..”  Said Khushi in a trembling, disbelieving voice.
Arnav interrupted with “I know.  Your sister gave me a call and told me to look for you.”
“Jiji? How? She does not know your number”  Khushi could not believe that Payal would call him to look for her.
“She called from your phone.  Okay? Now come.”  He replied, as brief as always.  He turned her towards his SUV and opened the door.  Khushi turned to him, and asked:
“With you? Where..?”
At that, Arnav gave a humourless smile and replied : “My place, of course.”  He helped her inside and closed the door after her.  He then walked around the front of the vehicle and got into his seat, all the while Khushi’s eyes stayed glued to him.
Arnav fastened his seat belt then did the same with hers.  He looked her in the face and asked : “Are you okay?” in a gentle concerned voice.  This was the first time Khushi heard him talk to her in a gentle manner.  She nodded and then looked away from his eyes which seemed to hypnotise her all the time.
Arnav seemed satisfied with that answer, for he started the car and drove.
“You know, if you were so impatient to come to me, you could just tell me.  Why leave your house in the middle of the night?  We had already decided to meet tomorrow morning anyway.  You could not wait, was that it? Hmm?”  He asked her, with a half-smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
At his attempt to turn the situation around using humour, Khushi felt a tear roll down her cheek.  And then another followed it.  And another.  In seconds, her eyes were gushing out a torrent of tears.  His words had broken the dam but Arnav was unaware that his joke would make her cry; he was lost for words and did not know what to do.  He stopped the car at the side of the road and tried talking to her:
“I am sorry, I was trying to lighten to situation.  Don’t cry.”  He told her in an awkward voice.  He did not really know how to deal with tears.  None of his previous women cried, at least none cried real, honest tears like her.  Khushi’s tears had turned to huge sobs, and she was trembling uncontrollably.  At this point Arnav was completely lost; he had no idea what he should do.  So he just undid both their seat belts and instinctively pulled her onto his lap, and he held her in his arms.  Khushi protested at first, resisting his tug.  But then her despair at her situation made her give in to him and she just let him hold her in his tight embrace.  Her face was against this warm throat and she sobbed as he just held her quietly.
Arnav let her cry, knowing she had just had a few hard blows.  His gentleness and care surprised him.  He was unaware of why he was offering comfort to her, but it felt strangely like the right thing to do in the circumstances.
After some minutes, the storm of Khushi’s tears passed.  Her sobs stopped and she sniffled a couple of times.  When she calmed down, Khushi became aware that she was sitting in his lap, Devil-Raizada’s lap.  She jerked away from him, breaking his hold on her.  Panicked, she scrambled back into her seat, and looked at him with incomprehension.
“Are you okay?” Arnav asked her again, this time with more compassion than the first time.  Amidst her sniffles, Khushi nodded to him.  Arnav handed her his handkerchief, which she wordlessly took.
Khushi was aware of his gaze on her.  She could hear her heart beating loudly.  And suddenly she could see the way his brown eyes looked so deep with concern.  She was completely shattered by her family’s behaviour towards her; and now by his own.  How come a man who had been blackmailing her was being so full of concern, she could not imagine.
Arnav fastened her seat belt, then his.  All the while, Khushi’s eyes remained on his face, only looking away when he glanced at her and their eyes met.  Arnav then started the car and told her:
“Payal told me you left home without your things, and she asked me to bring you to pick up your stuff.  You will not need any of those while with me, but she insisted that I bring you around.”
“Please, no.  I cannot go again.  My Amma  and Babuji and Buaji will..” Khushi began, in a panic.
“Relax, Khushi.  It’s okay.  You can stay in the car, and I’ll get your stuff from your sister.  I will not make you face them again. It’s okay, relax”,  Arnav said to her, in a reassuring voice, that once more surprised both of them..  Neither of the two knew why he was suddenly so kind to her.  Both concluded it was pity because he saw her cry.  The rest of the drive to her parent’s house passed in silence.
When finally they arrived, Arnav got down with a “Stay here, I’ll be right back” to Khushi.  Khushi watched as he walked to the front door and knocked.  Buaji opened and was shocked to see him.  He walked inside, past a shocked Buaji.  Five minutes later, Payal came out and walked towards the car.  She opened to door and hugged Khushi, then handed her a carrybag, saying :
“It has your personal stuff.  He said you will not need it, but I wanted to give you it all and talk to you.  He is scolding them for throwing you out.  He has scared them; they are properly chastised.  He was so angry and worried when I called him, I was surprised.  He seems to care about you.  He is rude and arrogant and I despise him.  But you say you like him.  And he obviously cares about you.  I don’t know how that will work out, and I am scared for you.  Please do not go with him. You and I can go away together and we will..”
At this Khushi stopped her:
“No Jiji, you stay at home.  Amma and Babuji need you.  Today they are angry with me.  But do not worry, one day they will understand.  And I have to go with him.  I told you that I like him.  I have to go with him”
Khushi was explaining to Payal when Arnav came back.  He formally thanked Payal, then got into his seat.  Payal and Khushi hugged each other and cried.  Their goodbyes were all the more painful since they were both unaware of what the future would be like.  Khushi did not know if she would see her sister again; she was unaware if the Devil-Raizada would allow it. And Payal was so heartbroken for her sister’s sake, and she was worried about Khushi going with that man.  Both sisters said goodbye painfully and bitterly.  Finally, Payal went back to their doorstep from where she watched as the big SUV drove out of their lane.  The sisters waved to each other, amidst tears, till they could no longer see each other.
Arnav had witnessed all of that patiently and silently.  As they drove, he did not speak a word, having retreated once more in his own personal turmoil-filled thoughts.  Khushi also did not speak one word, though she yearned to know where he was taking her; and what would happen then.
Both were lost in their own thoughts; wondering about what was going to happen next.  They were silent but were painfully aware of each other.  Khushi could not stop her eyes from glancing at his strong, long fingers on the wheel and while changing gears.  Such strong hands and powerful arms, that had been surprisingly gentle when they held her while she had cried.  His face, as she saw, was as if set in granite; there was such an expression on his face from which none could ever guess what he might be thinking of.  His eyes were well guarded beneath those lowered eyelids, his eyelashes serving as a veil, hiding his eyes and their expressions.
Arnav knew Khushi was staring at him.  He was aware of her every movement, glance, breath.  He could see his presence made her nervous and at the same time his presence quickened her heartbeat and breath.  He could see her heartbeat in the hollow of her neck... He was watching her in his mirror, without her knowledge.  He could hear her shallow, rapid breaths.  If he were to follow his instincts, he would pull up the car at the side of the road and ravish her right there.  But he knew she was too fragile right now, so he held himself in check.  His unexpected concern for this girl totally had him surprised.
Both of them contemplated their future, one with dread, the other with mounting impatience and excitement.  Neither was aware what would happen in the next few days.  As they drove on in the quiet night, they were unaware about the extent to which their lives would be completely changed.
